Luboš Hrůza

Luboš Hrůza was one of the most important Czech stage designers of the second half of the 20th century. A prominent pupil of František Tröster and a co-founder of Prague’s Činoherní klub (Drama Club), he had a major influence on the development of modern Czech scenography. His stage designs were always inventive, visually powerful, and at the same time sensitively supported both the actors and the director’s vision. In 1968 he emigrated to Norway, where he became head of design at the Nationaltheatret in Oslo. There he helped shape modern Scandinavian scenography and received prestigious awards for his work on productions of Henrik Ibsen’s plays. Critics described him as “a scenographer of world-class stature” and “an artist whose vision could lift a production to an entirely new level.” Thanks to his legacy and international impact, Luboš Hrůza remains a key figure of both Czech and European theatre.
