František Skřípek

František Skřípek (1923–2012) was a distinguished Czech scenographer whose artistic sensibility and precise understanding of stage space influenced several generations of theatre makers. After his studies, he became one of the key figures of Czech scenography in the second half of the 20th century, collaborating with theatres across the country. He left an especially notable mark at the City Theatres of Prague, where he created numerous stage designs, including the popular production of Charley’s Aunt, still remembered as one of the defining examples of his work. His designs were characterised by precise composition, a keen sense of detail, and an ability to blend humour, elegance and functionality. Critics and colleagues often referred to him as a “scenographic architect of emotions” or a “quiet co-creator of theatrical experiences,” whose stage pictures shaped the atmosphere of entire performances.
