A tough guy with a hypnotic gaze – that’s how audiences remember this beloved stage and film actor. Already at DAMU he was lucky to have remarkable classmates, among them Ladislav Mrkvička, Josef Abrhám, Marie Málková, Jiří Krampol and Jana Drbohlavová. After a short engagement in Ostrava, he moved to Prague to join the newly founded Činoherní klub, where he remained until his death in 1994. Audiences could admire his powerful performances in famous productions such as Mandragora, Crime and Punishment, The Government Inspector, or the comedy Tři v tom, which you can also watch on Dramox. He became widely known on television thanks to, among others, the fairy-tale film Three Veterans (Tři veteráni), in which he excelled alongside Josef Somr and Rudolf Hrušínský. He also appeared in films such as Valley of the Bees, Oil Lamps, The Snowdrop Festival and My Sweet Little Village. In 1994, he was posthumously awarded the Czech Lion for his dual role in Jan Švankmajer’s film Lekce Faust (Lesson Faust).
