Roman Polák
Roman Polák is one of the most prominent Slovak theatre directors, playwrights, pedagogues, and actors, regarded as a key figure in contemporary Central European theatre. A graduate of theatre directing at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, he has worked with leading stages across Slovakia and the Czech Republic, including the Slovak National Theatre, Astorka Korzo ’90 Theatre, National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, and Vinohrady Theatre. He also served as artistic director in several ensembles and continues to teach new generations of theatre-makers.
His directing style is defined by deep psychological insight, precise actor-focused work, and a contemporary approach to classical texts. Polák is known for reading canonical works freshly and sensitively — without unnecessary mannerisms, yet with emotional power, irony, and humanity. His productions are frequently praised by critics and audiences alike.
Roman Polák stands among directors who move theatre forward — honoring tradition, elevating actors, and bringing a vibrant contemporary voice to important stories.
