Prokop Voskovec

Prokop Voskovec Sr. was a Czech translator and lawyer who specialized in translating literary and dramatic texts from Russian and French into Czech. He was born in Vilnius, spent part of his childhood in Russia and later lived in Prague, where he studied law at the Charles-Ferdinand University. Alongside his legal career, he devoted himself to translation work and helped make European literature accessible to Czech readers and audiences. He translated mainly from Russian and French and occasionally from English. His translations are appreciated for their linguistic refinement, accuracy and sensitivity to the style of the original. Prokop Voskovec Sr. came from a culturally significant family – he was the brother of actor Jiří Voskovec and the father of translator Prokop Voskovec Jr.
