Ludvig Holberg

Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) was an Enlightenment playwright, writer, historian, and philosopher, considered the founder of modern Danish and Norwegian literature. He was born in Bergen, but spent most of his life in Copenhagen, where he worked as a university professor. He holds the same significance for Danish theatre as Molière does for French or Shakespeare for English. He wrote dozens of brilliant satirical comedies that still form a cornerstone of the European theatrical repertoire. Among his most frequently performed plays in the Czech Republic are Jeppe of the Hill (Jeppe z vršku—a classic staged on many Czech scenes, such as the Vinohrady Theatre or the National Theatre) and the comedy Erasmus Montanus.
