George Frideric Händel

George Frideric Handel was a German-British Baroque composer and one of the most important figures in European musical history, best known for inventing the English oratorio. Born in 1685 in Halle, Germany, he briefly studied law before his passion for music took over. After playing in a Hamburg opera orchestra, he traveled to Italy, where he mastered the Italian operatic style. In 1712, he settled permanently in London, became a British citizen, and served as the musical director of the Royal Academy of Music. He composed highly successful Italian operas (such as Rinaldo, Giulio Cesare, and Alcina). When public interest in Italian opera faded, he brilliantly shifted his focus to English oratorios—dramatic musical works without stage action. His most famous achievement is the oratorio Messiah (1741), featuring the iconic Hallelujah chorus. Today, audiences experience his work through modern recordings of world-class opera productions and the use of his music in numerous famous films.
